Why Houston Sings?
For the past nine years I have taught voice lessons to adult continuing education students through the Moores School of Music at UH. As I got to know them and their needs, I realized that Houston is full of adults who want to make music part of their lives! I also realized that it can be difficult for adults to find opportunities to study singing and perform.
Most of my students are very successful in their careers, but long for something DIFFERENT and CREATIVE to spark their passion.
These students helped me realize that there is a need for this. They have said, "I'm so glad I found you! I didn't know where to look!" Or "I'm so happy that you teach adults! Everyone else I contacted practically laughed at me when I told them I was 62 and wanted to take voice lessons."
They told me that they had a hard time finding a continuing education option where teachers were experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate. Intelligent, hard working professionals who wanted to make singing part of their life--who doesn't want to be part of that? I knew that I did.
I decided that I wanted to make it possible for amateur adult students to receive high quality vocal instruction that is welcoming, encouraging, and confidence-building. I believe that adult students deserve understanding and empathy for how big a challenge it is to begin musical study as an adult.
Adult students shouldn't have to choose between someone who is passionate about them and someone who is passionate about singing. And now, thanks to Houston Sings, they don't have to!
