Part 2--Snow White Vibrato
I played the clip of Snow White singing for the Indian student I mentioned and she said, "That sounds just like Lata!"
Lata Mangeshkar is a very famous Indian playback singer. (Playback singer means she is the singing voice for actresses in the Bollywood musicals.)
Indian singing style (historically) has a very different preferred aesthetic to Western singing. The fast vibrato and shallower quality that you heard in the Snow White song are considered desirable in this genre.
This one reason when we hear a Hindi song, we know IMMEDIATELY that it is Hindi. It is more the vocal quality (not the language) that distinguishes it. (Of course there are other musical differences, but at Houston Sings we focus on the voice!)
So here's the million dollar question--do you hear the similarities between Snow White and Lata? Comment below! I want to know what you think!
